Rhiannon Elizabeth Irons
As 2023 comes to an end, I’ve taken a moment to reflect on the many incredible films that have been released this. In fact, I wrote a little something about it that you can read here.
But now, like the rest of the world, I’m looking forward to 2024 and what it has in store for us. And when it comes to cinema, 2024 is shaping up to be quite the year. Particularly with sequels.
So, before we countdown the remaining 10 seconds of the year, let’s countdown the final Top 13 of 2023 and see what my most anticipated movies of 2024 are.
13: Untitled Karate Kid Movie
Not much is known about the story of this movie, but just knowing that Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan are returning, combining the original with the more recent instalment is enough to get us excited. This will be a sequel to the 2010 reboot of the franchise, but hopefully it will be a worthy entry into the series.
12: Mean Girls: The Musical
From the comedic mind of Tina Fey comes a new twist on the modern classic, Mean Girls. Following the story of the 2004 movie, but with a musical twist, movie-goers are set to see Cady Heron and Regina George go head-to-head again.
This remake is based on the Broadway musical adaptation of the original film. Both Tina Fey and Tim Meadows reprise their roles from the original film. Jon Hamm and Busy Phillips also star with Angourie Rice taking centre stage as Cady Heron.
11: The Fall Guy
Fresh of his Golden Globe nominated performance in Barbie, Ryan Gosling is set to hit the screen in this David Leitch picture.
A remake of the 1981 movie which starred Lee Majors, this film was made in Australia with Ryan Gosling famously closing the Sydney Harbour Bridge to film. No doubt this will be filled with lots of action for those looking for a new high-octane movie. Although, I’ll be there for the chemistry between Gosling and Emily Blunt.
10: Kung Fu Panda 4
Po is gearing up to become the spiritual leader of his Valley of Peace, but also needs someone to take his place as Dragon Warrior. As such, he will train a new kung fu practitioner for the spot and will encounter a villain called the Chameleon who conjures villains from the past.
This is tipped to be the best movie in the franchise. With a star-studded cast including Viola Davis as Chameleon, this is sure to be fun for the whole family.
9: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
The origin story of renegade warrior Furiosa before her encounter and team up with Mad Max.
Most people I talk to are excited to see Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth headlining this blockbuster from George Miller. 45 years after the collapse, a young Furiosa is taken from her family. She will devote the rest of her life to finding her way home. This is her odyssey. And we will be with her every step of the way.
8: Nosferatu
A gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.
With a star-studded cast including Willem Dafoe, Bill Skarsgard and Lily-Rose Depp and directed by Robert Eggers, this remake has been almost 10 years in the making. Colour me intrigued on how they will attempt to capitalise on a true cinema masterpiece.
7: Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
The new installment of the Monsterverse puts the mighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal deadly threat hidden within our world that threatens the existence of both their species and us. Delving straight into the origins of Hollow Earth, this film will explore the ancient Titan battle that brought man and monster together forever.
What the hell could make Godzilla and Kong team up? That’s what I need to know. See you in the cinema for this one!
6: Joker: Folie a Deux
An unknown plot but the promise of a musical entry to the Clown Prince of Crime’s story, this film sees Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as Arthur Fleck and teaming up with Lady Gaga, who is Harley Quinn.
What we can deduce from leaked images is that it’s going to be an interesting entry into the DC universe. In fact, this is the first movie musical to be released theatrically based on a DC comic. And being Joaquin Phoenix’s first ever sequel means there’s a lot riding on this. Better rev up that Harley, Mista J!
5: Argylle
An introverted spy novelist is drawn into the activities of a sinister underground syndicate after the plots of her books become a reality.
We played this trailer during an episode of QUIZarenaLIVE and was highly surprised by the amount of star power it bestowed upon us. Catherine O’Hara, Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, Samuel L. Jackson, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, and John Cena all star in this Matthew Vaughn film. Combining action with humour and a cat means only one thing. Pass the popcorn!
4: Deadpool 3
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman back again as Deadpool and Wolverine respectively was enough to draw people’s interest. Adding Jennifer Garner reprising her role as Elektra has me booking my ticket well in advance.
With the MCU in tatters at the moment, will this be the film to turn it all around?
3: Inside Out 2
Following on from the 2015 smash hit, this sequel is set to show inside Riley’s mind as she enters her teenage years, which means a new emotion – and one I’m very familiar with – Anxiety.
Tony Hale and Liza Lapira step into the roles of Fear and Disgust in place of Bill Hader and Mandy Kaling will be an interesting change, but seeing as the movie is all about changes, embrace it. This will be Pixar’s first follow-up film in five years since Toy Story 4 (2019) and if the reaction to the trailer is any indication, this is set to be a big hit with families.
2: Beetlejuice 2
A much-needed follow-up to the comedy from 1988 sees Catherine O’Hara, Winona Ryder, and Michael Keaton return as Delia, Lydia, and Beetlejuice. Also included in the new cast are Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Justin Theroux.
Tim Burton returns to the director’s chair for this easily most anticipated sequel of 2024.
Is it tacky if I do it? Technically, I’ve already said it twice. Oh well. Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!
1: Wicked: Part One
What could possibly top the ghost with most? How about the story of how a green-skinned woman framed by the Wizard of Oz becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.
The first of a two-part feature film adaptation of the Broadway musical, Wicked is easily my most anticipated film of 2024. Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba while Ariana Grande is Glinda, and Jeff Goldblum is the Wizard.
You better believe I’ll be Defying Gravity to get to see this on the big screen.
