Paddington Bear heads to Peru for a new adventure. Meghan Markle delays her Netflix show, and what are Nintendo and Lego up to? All this and more in the Rushcutter Entertainment Report.
Hey everyone, I’m Rhiannon Elizabeth Irons and welcome to the Rushcutter Entertainment Report. We’ve got a lot get through this week, so let’s head to the movies and check out Paddington in Peru.
Pack your marmalade sandwiches and your wellingtons. Paddington Bear is back with an all-new adventure.
I grew up with Paddington and his stories, and I was a fan of the first two films. The live-action movies managed to capture the essence of the beloved character that enchanted fans around the world. Even her majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth II, was a fan of Paddington, starring opposite the British bear in a skit to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee.
The first two films were fun and full of charm that audiences have come to expect from the Paddington franchise.
This film, while still enjoyable, is the weakest in the franchise.
The locations are beautiful, and the CGI look good. The story lacks creativity while the acting is a bit subpar, although I will say Antonio Banderas stole the show and spoiler alert, Hugh Grant does make an appearance as well.
While this is entertaining and certainly provided a few laughs, the screenplay is problematic with clunky dialogue that results in some very cringe-worthy moments. The storyline is definitely the best of the trilogy, it's just a shame that the film didn't quite know what to do with that, hence my comment of it lacking creativity. Truth be told, at times it felt as though the script was run through ChatGPT in a desperate bid to pad out the runtime.
With a different director at the helm, this film certainly takes different strides to what had come before it. Removing the story from London might be jarring for some fans of the Paddington franchise. But don’t let that difference be the thing that deters you from seeing it.
I give Paddington in Peru a 6/10. It’s not a bad film, but it’s also not groundbreaking. It’s nothing like the first two films, so be prepared for that. But despite its flaws, it is enjoyable and if you have little ones, it might just be worth a trip to the cinema to see.
Meghan Markle has postponed the release of her $100 million Netflix series, With Love, Meghan out of sensitivity for the victims of the wildfires that have been ravaging California.
The project was due to be released this week, but the Duchess of Sussex requested the premiere be delayed until March 4th.
"I'm thankful to my partners at Netflix for supporting me in delaying the launch, as we focus on the needs of those impacted by the wildfires in my home state of California," Meghan said in a statement on Sunday, per People.
With Love, Meghan is described as “a heartfelt tribute to the beauty of Southern California.” Markle produces the show, which “blends practical how-to’s and candid conversation with friends, new and old.” She shares personal tips and tricks for cooking, gardening and more. Special guests will include Roy Choi, Mindy Kaling and Alice Waters.
Eight episodes of the series have been ordered. The series is part of a five-year, $100 million deal that Netflix inked with the couple in 2020.
With Love, Meghan was shot in Montecito, California, where Markle lives with her husband, Prince Harry, about 80 miles north of Los Angeles. The couple have reportedly opened their home to friends who were evacuated due to the wildfires, and have donated clothes and other items to those affected by the fires.
And if you wish to donate to the victims of these horrific fires, you can do so by donating to the American Red Cross, California Fire Foundation, Pasadena Humane Society, or GoFundMe, which has not only set up a direct page to donate to a 2025 wildfire relief fund, they have also created a hub page for all the individual fundraises set up by impacted LA locals. To ensure that money goes to the people who really need it right now, GoFundMe’s team is verifying official fundraisers for people affected by the LA wildfires, with more than 800 different fundraisers set up. Nintendo has announced a new console launch for later this year…. Well… sort of.
Taking to Twitter… I mean X…. oh you know what I mean, taking to social media, Nintendo confirmed that it’s partnering with LEGO to release a build your own Game Boy.
I just checked the date. No, it’s not April 1st. This is legit.
Currently scheduled to launch in October 2025, the set follows on from the Lego NES set that the companies launched back in 2020. This is definitely one for the collectors.
No further details including price, description outside of it being a classic Game Boy, or even a glimpse of the final product have been released. But if it’s following the NES footsteps, it’s safe to assume the price tag will be hefty as the NES Lego set was $200 – although that did come with 2,646 bricks and was a full replica of the console, game cartridge, controller, and TV.
The possibilities are truly endless with Lego. So tell me, are you a Lego collector? Let me know your favourite Lego set in the comments below.
What year is it? No, seriously, what year is it? There’s both a Scream movie and I Know What You Did Last Summer movie currently being filmed. I feel like I’ve been transported back to the 90s.
According to Bloody Disgusting, Freddie Prinze Jr said that the new characters are the main focus of the legacy sequel which is currently being filmed in Australia.
He told David Miniatures on the Scale Talk Podcast that his character Ray Bronson and Ray’s love interest, Julie James, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt, aren’t the centre of the story, saying quote, “They’re not the leads of the movie by any stretch of the imagination. “[Kaytin Robinson] made them such a powerful pushing forward of the other cast. It’s not like, ‘Oh, here’s the Ray and Julie movie that we deserve.’ That doesn’t even make sense. That guy’s dead. So it has to be new generation. And the way she sort of laces us in there with them is just beautifully done. The script is wonderfully written.”
I don’t know about anyone else, but all I took out of that was Muse Watson’s character of Ben Willis is dead, which means we more than likely won’t get a cameo from the original hook wielding killer. And now my interest has kind of dwindled. Oh well, at least I can get my Muse Watson fix by reliving his appearance on QUIZarenaLIVE.
Of course, that is still purely speculation as there has been no mention of what the story involves, so there is a sliver of a chance that Muse may still make an appearance as Ben Willis. Or maybe one of the new cast members is the one brandishing the odd weapon of choice. Or maybe… no, I’ll stop.
Even though Julie and Ray won’t be the focus, it sounds like the I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel will honour the past movies and does a great job with Ray’s character. I just hope they focus only on I Know and I Still Know. We don’t need a reminder that I’ll Always Know exists.
I Know What You Did Last Summer’s sequel is set to hit theatres on July 18th 2025.
And finally, in a shocking turn of events, author Neil Gaiman has been accused of sexual assault by multiple women, as detailed in a recent New York Magazine article titled “There Is No Safe Word.” The article follows a report by Tortoise Media, which initially surfaced in July, revealing allegations from two women and featuring a podcast that discussed the experiences of five women. The New York Magazine piece expands on this, with reporter Lila Shapiro interviewing eight women, four of whom also participated in the Tortoise podcast.
One notable account comes from Scarlett Pavlovich, who was 22 when she met Gaiman’s ex-wife, Amanda Palmer, in New Zealand. Pavlovich alleges that during a babysitting arrangement, Gaiman invited her into a claw-foot tub in his garden, where he then joined her naked and sexually assaulted her.
Representatives for Gaiman have denied all allegations, asserting that any interactions were consensual. They stated that while BDSM practices may not appeal to everyone, they are lawful between consenting adults. However, the women involved claim that consent for specific activities was not adequately discussed beforehand, despite having at times referred to Gaiman as “master,” which he desired.
Since the allegations surfaced, Gaiman’s film and television projects have faced significant changes. The third season of Prime Video’s “Good Omens” will now conclude with a single 90-minute episode, with Gaiman absent from production. Additionally, Disney has paused its adaptation of “The Graveyard Book,” and Netflix has canceled “Dead Boy Detectives,” although it remains unclear if these decisions are directly linked to the allegations. In contrast, “The Sandman” Season 2 is still slated for release this year on Netflix, alongside Prime Video’s adaptation of “Anansi Boys.”
As of now, Prime Video has not commented on the allegations, and responses from Netflix and WBTV are pending.
