Jim Carrey, who announced his retirement from acting back in 2022, is returning to the big screen, reprising his role as Dr. Robotnik for the new Sonic sequel, aptly named Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
A teaser trailer was released overnight showing the title of the film and ended with a sinister, if not familiar laugh.
The official Twitter account for the movie shared a Tweet saying “You all thought I was gone, but I’ve just been underground. What you’ve seen from is only a #shadow of things to come…”
This is confirmation that Jim Carrey is back, and Shadow the Hedgehog will be coming to the big screen on the 20th of December 2024.
The teaser trailer from the official Paramount socials for the movie series mentioned that the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 release window doubled as a tease for Shadow the Hedgehog too. Spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen Sonic the Hedgehog 2 yet, but the movie ended with a very clear indication that we’d see Shadow introduced in a future instalment of the franchise and following the introduction of Knuckles.
While I’m happy to see Shadow make an appearance in the series, let’s turn our attention back to the big news. Variety reported that Jim would return after it was left up in the air whether he’d return for another Sonic movie. Again, if you haven’t seen the second film, spoiler alert, the movie ended with Robotnik’s giant robot splatting on the ground, though without Robotnik’s body recovered, it was heavily implied that he was still alive. That tease was clear enough, but with Carrey retiring shortly after the film’s release, fans began to worry if Sonic 3 would even go ahead. Or if it did, would Carrey be replaced?
Now we can safely say he is back! Although the storyline for the new film is under wraps, based on the preview and obvious hashtag hint, this film will provide the inevitable clash between Sonic the Hedgehog and Shadow.
I’m excited. Not just for Jim’s return but also to see Shadow hit the big screen. What about you? Are you hyped for Sonic the Hedgehog 3? Be sure to let me know in the comments below.
